A regular stopping point for travelers on Lake Superior’s North Shore, Betty’s Pies has been a Midwest favorite since Betty opened her doors in Two Harbors 1956. People come from all over the U.S.—and even the world—to taste their famous Five-Layer Chocolate and countless other legendary pies like Coconut Cream, Great Lakes “Crunch”, and Strawberry-Rhubarb. A truly nostalgic café and bakery, Betty’s makes visitors feel right at home—especially once they sink their teeth into one of her handmade pies. After scouring the country in search of America’s greatest pies, we’ve come to the conclusion that it just doesn’t get any more authentic—and better—than this.

About The Food

There’s a pie for everyone at Betty’s. There’s the Toffee Cream, Coconut Cream, Maple Walnut, French Blueberry (made with wild Maine blueberries), Strawberry Rhubarb, Caramel Apple Crunch...and on and on. But all who’ve tried it agree you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced Betty’s signature favorite, the Five Layer Chocolate Pie. Made with layers of dark chocolate, mousse-like chocolate whip cream, and cinnamon meringue, it’s no surprise this Betty’s original has been their most popular pie for six decades running. All pies are made the same way Betty made them—by hand, from scratch every day, using the very best ingredients available.

Meet The Owner

It all began in 1956 when Betty's father Aleck built a fish shack by the Stewart River on Highway 61. Realizing the fishermen might enjoy some goodies while waiting during their pit stops, Betty started making donuts and coffee for them. Soon she added hamburgers and hotdogs. As her customer base grew, she dropped the old fish stand and in 1958 and turned it into a café: Betty's Café. The tipping point of success and popularity came when Betty added pies to her menu. Demand for these delicious and unique pies grew, and their success would build a foundation for a baking legacy that has now lasted over 60 years.
