More than 80 years after opening, Black's, the oldest continuously family owned barbecue restaurant in the United States, still sets the standard for Texas-style slow-smoked meats. Owner Edgar Black, Jr., the son of the founder who launched the business in 1932, still does things the way his dad did, using post oak to indirectly smoke premium cuts of meat, seasoned only with salt and pepper, for up to 24 hours. His traditional preparations have garnered rave reviews in The New York Times, Southern Living, Texas Monthly, Bon Appétit, and Gourmet and features on The Travel Channel and The Food Network.

About The Food

Black’s meats have been smoked low and slow on the same barbecue pits for 80 years. With unique L-shaped smokers, they allow wood to be loaded at both ends and funnel the smoke through a single center. The result is deep-flavored, succulent smoked meats that epitomize the best of Texas barbecue. Legendary brisket, made only from Certified Angus Beef literally set the standard when Edgar Jr. started the trend of smoking the cut in the 1950s. The famous sausage is made in traditional German style, and outstanding over-sized beef and pork ribs embody tender, smoky perfection.

Meet The Owner

Edgar Black, Sr. (born in 1889), drove his family, cattle, and belongings on horseback and wagon from Texas’s eastern Caldwell County hills to Lockhart when his son, Edgar Black, Jr., was six years old. There he launched a meat market and began smoking meat. Edgar, Jr., took over the business with his wife Norma in 1949 and ran it until their son Kent and his son Barrett took over daily operations. Now a three-generation landmark, which represented Texas barbecue at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C, it remains dedicated to traditional barbecue excellence.

Man Up Texas BBQ

"Don’t miss this friendly, family-owned restaurant serving traditionally smoked barbecue."

At Black's you're getting a taste of history and tradition. The family-run establishment has stayed true to its roots for decades, and people drive for miles to Lockhart to have the same brisket or ribs as they did when they grew up (the venue's pits started cooking meat in 1932).
