Introduction

What started as a small farm and fruit stand in 1899 is today a historic destination and a source for spectacularly juicy and flavorful California cherries, apricots and other seasonal fruit treats like Ojai Pixie tangerines. Third generation farmer Charlie Olson still oversees the family farm while daughter Deborah tends to the business. The many fiercely loyal and long-time Olson customers are a testament to their commitment to quality. Their fruit and business practices have long been celebrated by Martha Stewart who stops by whenever she’s in Northern California. In 2014 Olson’s Cherries was a Finalist for Martha Stewart’s American Made Award for Food – celebrating great American makers: entrepreneurs, artisans, and small-business owners who are creating, inspiring, improving local communities, and changing the way we eat, shop, work, and live.

About The Fruit

In the age of industrialized farming, Charlie Olson and his team still lug pipe across the three acres of cherries and 10 acres of apricots to irrigate the soil that has nurtured fruit trees for nearly a century. He and his team also hand-sort the cherries on an antique conveyor belt. More than a mere labor of love, this high-touch approach allows Olson to keep careful watch and care over the fruit he and his family have become famous for—and to produce outstandingly flavorful and ripe results. Over the years as their Silicon Valley farm has gotten smaller, Charlie’s daughter, Deborah, has been working for the past 20 years with a select group of small family farmers who share their growing conditions, sustainable farming practices, and commitment to quality to ensure an ample quantity of juicy, flavor-bursting fruit for their loyal customers.

Meet The Owner

Charlie Olson grew up in the farming business. A third generation farmer from Sunnyvale, California, now in the heart of Silicon Valley, he owes his heritage to his grandparents, Swedish immigrants who purchased their first Sunnyvale orchard in 1899 and began harvesting Bing cherries and Blenheim apricots. Charlie is the recipient of Sunnyvale’s Lifetime Achievement Award for making the town a better place. His daughter, Deborah, runs the business and their landmark fruit stand, and in the family tradition, hand selects all of the fruit they sell. Together they’re taking this iconic California farm stand and its delicious fruit into its second century.

Storage & Care

Store unwashed cherries in a sealed container in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Remove any cherries that are bruised or showing decay, as they will affect other cherries. Cherries should keep for up to a week if stored properly. Wash when ready to enjoy!

FREEZING: You can freeze cherries with or without the pits. Remove the stems. Wash and pat dry. Freeze on a cookie sheet (make sure they do not touch each other.) After frozen, place in a freezer bag. May be stored frozen up to 10 months. Enjoy frozen or partially thawed. Defrosted cherries can be refrigerated for 3-4 days. Refreezing is not recommended. Before cooking or baking, do not defrost cherries. Keeping them frozen will allow you to retain all the sweet juice

Dried fruit is best stored in the refrigerator or in a cool, dry place.
