Introduction

The original idea behind Eataly is simple: to gather all of the high-quality Italian food and drink under one roof where you can eat, shop, and learn. Oscar Farinetti first envisioned the Eataly concept in 2002, and after five years of researching and planning, he opened the first store in Torino, Italy, in January 2007. In August 2010, when Eataly opened its first U.S. location in New York City's Flatiron district, The New York Times' Sam Sifton wrote: "Now comes Eataly, an enormous and enormously crowded new Italian-food market and restaurant collection that opened recently off Madison Square Park: 50,000 square feet of restaurants and peninsular provisions, with a fishmonger and butcher (and vegetable butcher) and an espresso bar, a wine store, a cheese store, a cooking school, a kitchenware department and a great deal more. It is giant and amazing."
