Literally translating to “eat a bagel” in Yiddish, Ess-a was first opened by Austrian immigrants in 1976 in NYC’s Stuyvesant Town neighborhood, just east of Gramercy Park. Coming from an Austrian baking family, it’s not surprising that within two years their hand-rolled bagels were voted the best in the Tri-State area. They have since become part of the local community, with both loyal customers who’ve been coming since day one, and newer ones who upon moving into the neighborhood catch one whiff of these legendary bagels and become instant converts. While best known for their huge, crusty bagels, Ess-a-Bagel also offers a wide range of classic Jewish appetizing specialties like nova salmon and smoked whitefish salad.

About The Food

Ess-a-bagels have become a New York experience that come in all the traditional bagel flavors—think sesame, garlic & poppy—and more unique must-try’s like pumpernickel-raisin and multigrain everything. Ess-a puts no preservatives or additives in their Bagel dough. With low amounts of sugar and salt, combined with a higher quality flour, Ess-a-Bagels are hand-rolled, then boiled in impossible-to-replicate New York City tap water, and baked to a perfectly crunchy exterior and dense chewy center. The flavor and texture of these bagels is indescribably good—something your taste buds deserve to experience.

Meet The Owner

In the Summer of 1976, Florence and Gene Wilpon and Florence’s brother Aaron Wenzelberg opened Ess-a-Bagel on 1st avenue. Fourty plus years later Ess-a-Bagel on 1st Avenue is still family owned, operated by Aaron’s son Michael and Gene's nephew, David who continue the tradition of baking and serving New York’s tastiest, crustiest bagels with passion and pride (and topping them with delicious schmears, spreads and smoked fish).

Shipping Days

At FoodyDirect we are doing everything we can to drive down shipping costs for our customers, including offering Low Flat-Rate Shipping.

$ 9.95 Flat-Rate Shipping - If your shipping address is reachable from Ess-a-Bagel overnight via UPS Ground service, you will be presented with the incredibly low shipping rate of $ 9.95 upon checkout.
$ 29.95 Flat-Rate Shipping - If your shipping address is beyond next-day ground reach, you will be presented with a flat rate of just $ 29.95 for UPS Next Day Air Saver upon checkout.
Note: UPS "Next Day Air Saver" is not available to certain remote locations. In these rare cases, "Next Day Air" will be offered, for an additional cost of $5.

*Please note that the flat rates above will be applied per shipping box. While some packages can be combined into a single box, several packages from Ess-a-Bagel require their own shipping box. You will be presented with the actual shipping rate before making your purchase.

Saturday delivery is available for an additional charge. Service to Alaska is available for an additional charge (sorry). Service to Hawaii and outside the U.S. currently not available.

Orders are shipped on Monday through Friday, except holidays. Orders placed by 6:00 AM (ET) can be shipped that day, for arrival the following day. Perishable items cannot be shipped over a weekend and cannot be delivered on Sunday or Monday.

Weather and unforeseen circumstances can delay your shipment. We strongly recommend that you schedule your order to arrive at least 1 business day before your desired usage date to allow for any delays.

Shipping Options

The following shipping options are available depending upon the delivery date selected:

Ground Shipping (Overnight) - If a customer’s shipping address is reachable overnight via UPS Ground service, they will be presented with a $9.95 Flat-Rate Shipping upon checkout. Orders will be delivered via UPS Ground service on the selected arrival date, between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM to residences, and between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to businesses.

UPS Next Day Air Saver - If the shipping address is not reachable overnight via UPS Ground service, the customer will be presented with $29.95 Flat-Rate Shipping upon checkout. The order will be shipped via UPS Next Day Air Saver and will be delivered by the end of the next day following shipment. Delivery time can vary based on area, but can be as late as 8:00 p.m. to residences and 5:00 p.m. to businesses. Note: UPS "Next Day Air Saver" is not available to certain remote locations. In these rare cases, "Next Day Air" will be offered, for an additional cost of $10.

UPS Next Day Air - Your package will be delivered the following morning after it ships, in most cases by noon. The flat-rate for UPS Next Day service is $34.95.

Saturday Delivery - Saturday delivery is available for Next Day Air only, for an additional charge of $20 per shipment (for a total cost of $54.95). Deliveries are made between 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM (noon), depending upon delivery address. Saturday delivery is not available for UPS Ground shipments.

Packaging & Delivery

All bagels and smoked fish from Ess-a-Bagel are shipped in extra thick recyclable foam containers with sufficient coolant to assure it arrives in excellent condition within the max allowable transit time of 1 day.

All orders are shipped signature release. This means UPS will leave the package at the doorstep, front desk or gate associated with the shipping address without requiring a signature upon delivery. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the contents of the package are stored in a freezer or refrigerator promptly after delivery. FoodyDirect cannot be responsible for orders with incomplete or invalid addresses, or that are sent to recipients who are not available to store the contents of the order on the day of arrival. UPS cannot deliver to a P.O. box.

Storage & Care

To enjoy your food right out of the box:

• Microwave your bagel for 15-25 seconds. This will bring your bagel to room temperature while maintaining the delicious crust and chewy inside, just as they are when they come out of the oven. • Schmear the cream cheese on generously • Apply two to four slices of lox (or more!) • Top with a slice of tomato, some red onion and… ENJOY!

To enjoy your food at a later date: (if you can resist…)


• Slice your bagels in half and place in a freezer bag. They can be frozen without any other preparation. • When you are ready to eat, split the bagel to create a larger surface area. Choose one of the following options: • Microwave open-faced bagel on high for 20 to 30 seconds, then toast on the light setting. OR • Place your open-faced (frozen) bagels in the oven or toaster oven on a piece of aluminum foil. Bake for at 350 for about five minutes.

Smoked Fish and cream cheese:

• Refrigerate your lox, white fish salad, baked salmon salad and/or cream cheese immediately. (Immediately – don’t wait, don’t read on until you’ve refrigerated) • Your lox can be frozen in heavy-duty aluminum foil or a freezer bag. We recommend freezing in the portion size that is best for you. When you are ready to eat, defrost overnight in the refrigerator. Lox can be frozen for up to two months. • Your whitefish salad and baked salmon salad will be good for a week to ten days in your refrigerator; we do not recommend freezing.
