What started as a pet project for founder Karen Freer after she discovered she had celiac disease has become an NYC sensation for gluten-free bread lovers. The choice for famed chefs Eric Ripert and Michael White, Free Bread breaks the crumbly, bland gluten-free bread mold with loaves, buns, and muffins so deliciously inspired they’re served in NYC’s most famous dining rooms, including Le Bernadin and Telepan.

About The Food

Free Bread’s breads, croutons, muffins, and rolls are made from the finest ingredients in a gluten-free facility in Long Island City, Queens. Their flavors and textures so surpass the competition, they have become the choice for many finer New York City restaurants offering a GF alternative. Chef Eric Ripert describes the Pullman loaf as having “the best flavor and moisture level”—two gluten-free characteristics that are hard to come by. “Moxy” Rolls, which are used in upscale sandwich shops around Manhattan, are nicely crusty, while their gluten-free hamburger buns are the choice for many of New York City’s most popular burger joints, including Heartland Brewery. If you’ve been searching for a better gluten-free bread experience, you’ve just found it.

Meet The Owner

When Free Bread founder Karen Freer was diagnosed with celiac disease as an adult, the only thing she really missed was great bread. A sucker for a challenge, she set out to achieve a nearly impossible and outrageously frustrating goal—to make gluten-free bread taste, look, and feel delicious. Months of trial and error resulted in recipes that wowed even gluten eaters. Before she had the chance to change her mind, Free Bread was off and running and is now making GF bread in Long Island City’s Organic Food Incubator building, which houses another outstanding FoodyDirect partner—Alchemy Creamery.

Snob Essentials

After experimenting with gluten-free flour, millet and flax, this banker-turned-professional-baker perfected a recipe for crusty, biscuit-like rolls that taste just like the ones she'd been missing with her soups and salads.

Packaging & Delivery

All breads from Free Bread are packed and shipped to arrive in excellent condition within the max allowable transit time of 2 days.

All orders are shipped signature release. This means UPS will leave the package at the doorstep, front desk or gate associated with the shipping address without requiring a signature upon delivery. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the contents of the package are stored in a freezer or refrigerator promptly after delivery. FoodyDirect cannot be responsible for orders with incomplete or invalid addresses, or that are sent to recipients who are not available to store the contents of the order on the day of arrival. UPS cannot deliver to a P.O. box.

Storage & Care

When you receive your order, remove whatever breads you think will be consumed in two days and place them in a plastic bag. If you prefer your breads stored in the fridge, you will get an extra 3-6 days of freshness, but the texture will change slightly. Free Bread lasts 4-6 months in the freezer.
