Picking orchard fruit
Introduction

Ikeda’s, a family-run business started by Sam Ikeda over 40 years ago as a fruit stand, offers fresh fruit and produce direct from their orchards and local farms at their two northern California markets. But they are most famous for their freshly baked fruit pies, and savory chicken potpies and beef hand pies. While some pies are offered seasonally such as their summer peach pie and their Thanksgiving pumpkin-pecan pie, others like their legendary apple pie are offered year-round. From the recipes to the farm fresh fruit, these are no ordinary pies. Not only do they use apples from their own local orchards, they pick the apples riper than most others do, yielding sweeter and more flavorful pie. And their potpies have become nearly as popular as their fruit pies.

About The Pies

The Ikedas grow the fruit that’s baked into every pie and all the pies are hand-made and baked fresh daily. They value quality so much that the bakers even adjust the apple pie recipe depending on the individual taste of each batch of apples as the harvest season progresses. The hand-crimped and folded crust is particularly thin and rich due in part to a touch of vinegar added to the dough. Their signature Dutch apple pie uses riper Fuji and Granny Smith apples, for a sweeter and more flavorful pie. Their flaky potpies and hand pies (aka "Pasties") are hearty treats to be savored.

Meet the Ikeda Family

Ikeda’s is a family-run business, started by Sam Ikeda over 40 years agowith his wife Sally, and operated today by sons Glen and Steve. Sam started as a farmer in Auburn, California, but not just any farmer. He was a spectacular orchard farmer with a green thumb and would only pick the largest, sweetest, and juiciest fruit to sell. He was also a smart businessman who envisioned a fruit-stand where his fresh produce could go directly from the trees of the farm to the shelves of the market. He made his vision a reality and built a fresh fruit market. Since then, his sons Glen and Steve have expanded the business into a larger operation with a restaurant and pie bakery in Auburn and Davis.
