Introduction

We embrace and celebrate the culinary treasures of our ancestral home in Abruzzo. It’s an area of pristine and unspoiled beauty, where one third of the region is comprised of National Parks and called “The Green Heart of Europe”. It’s is a region with abundant natural resources that are fiercely protected by the inhabitants. From the rugged peaks of its mountains, to the shores of the blue Adriatic, this region of only 1.3 million people produce some of the most treasured foods in all of Italy. One of the overriding factors that contribute to the quality of these products is the location. Anversa degli Abruzzi is located in the center of two of the largest National Parks in Italy and is also a World Wildlife Federation site. In these pristine surroundings, with the rugged mountains and micro climates, over 125 wild herbs and flowers have been identified. So the sheep, the bees, the olives and the plants all flourish in these beautiful surroundings. These are products that otherwise would not be available outside of this small region.

About the Food

What Makes Us Different - “Solo Abruzzese” - Only from Abruzzo!

On the farm “La Porta dei Parchi”, in Anversa degli Abruzzi, our cousin Nunzio Marcelli, his family and the family of the co-operatives producers, make these rare and award winning cheeses, most of which are listed in the Slow Food Book of Italian Cheese. As Florence Fabricant said in The New York Times “It doesn’t get more artisanal than this”. Oct 7, 2015 We couldn’t agree more. The honey is produced at an altitude of 2000 ft. in Tornareccio, Chieti, the “Town of Honey” by Luca Finnocchio and his family. This ancient medieval village with a population of less than 2000, has megalithic walls that date back to the 7th century B.C. Luca is one of the most acclaimed honey producers in all of Italy and practices the ancient art of nomadic bee keeping. This extraordinary honey is produced without heating and comes to you in its natural state.
Orazio Masciarelli and his family of four, produce our bronze cut pasta the same way since they began in 1867. Simply with flour and water. Really, some of the finest Italian pasta made. From the Adriatic coast, Peppino Ursini, the “Mastro Oleario” and his family produce our extraordinary olive oils. We and our customers think they are the best we have ever had.

Packaging

All perishable food from Marcelli Formaggi is shipped in a sealed, inflatable cooler bag with sufficient coolant to assure it arrives in excellent condition within the max allowable transit time of 2 days.
All orders are shipped signature release. This means Fedex will leave the package at the doorstep, front desk or gate associated with the shipping address without requiring a signature upon delivery. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the contents of the package are stored in a refrigerator promptly after delivery. FoodyDirect cannot be responsible for orders with incomplete or invalid addresses, or that are sent to recipients who are not available to store the contents of the order on the day of arrival. Fedex cannot deliver to a P.O. box.

Storage & Care

Marcelli Formaggi ships all its cheeses vacuum-sealed for maximum freshness. If you need to re-wrap, try waxed paper taped tightly closed. As a last resort, plastic wrap is fine, but don’t forget about your cheese, or it will get sweaty and suffocate. Soft cheeses like Ricotta are best consumed within a week to ten days. Harder cheeses like Pecorino can be kept three to four weeks.
