Founded in 1940 by Spanish Civil War veteran Murray Greenberg, Manhattan’s premier cheese shop aims “to find the most delicious cheese across the globe, and then feed it to you!” Owner Rob Kaufelt, who writes and educates on cheese and specialty foods and is the author of The Murray’s Cheese Handbook, and his team regularly travel to Europe and across the US to do exactly that.

About The Food

On FoodyDirect we feature the most popular, coveted selections from Murray’s 250-plus cheeses from all over the world. Carefully stored, often in Murray’s custom-built subterranean caves, this curated selection covers the best of the globe—from the U.S. and France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and beyond—paired with equally supreme specialty food accompaniments that enhance the cheese experience.

Meet The Owner

Murray’s became New York’s premier cheese destination when Robert Kaufelt became the owner in the early ‘90s. A New Jersey native, he grew up in a grocery family, graduated from Cornell University, then managed the rapid growth of his family’s supermarket business in the 1980s. After moving to Greenwich Village and deciding to go into specialty foods, Rob overheard Murray’s then-owner say that he was closing the shop. Rob made him an offer, becoming the third owner of New York’s oldest cheese shop.

Zagat Survey, 2012

Among the city’s top destinations “for all things cheesy”, this West Village “mecca” – “complete with worshiping crowds” – lays out a “ridiculously expansive” lactic array, plus “fabulous” charcuterie and deli items. Patrons cite the in-house “caves”, “classroom” and catering menu as more reasons to sing “cheese, glorious cheese”

We’d argue that Murray’s Cheese is an institution not because of its longevity or its legions of fans, but because of its impact. Since Kaufelt bought the business in 1991 from second owner Louis Tudda—moving what was by then an Italian cheese counter to a slightly bigger spot on the corner of Cornelia and Bleecker—he’s turned the place into a full-fledged dairy emporium, a multifaceted mecca that isn’t just bringing literal tons of great cheese to the masses, but laying the groundwork to make it easier for cheesemakers—and even other store owners—to do it, too.

Packaging & Delivery

All food from Murray's Cheese is shipped in extra thick recyclable foam containers with sufficient coolant to assure it arrives in excellent condition within the max allowable transit time of 1 day.

All orders are shipped signature release. This means Fedex will leave the package at the doorstep, front desk or gate associated with the shipping address without requiring a signature upon delivery. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the contents of the package are stored in a refrigerator promptly after delivery. FoodyDirect cannot be responsible for orders with incomplete or invalid addresses, or that are sent to recipients who are not available to store the contents of the order on the day of arrival. Fedex cannot deliver to a P.O. box.

Storage & Care

Murray's ships all its cheeses wrapped in specially designed cheese paper, which they recommend reusing. This paper protects the cheese while allowing it to breathe. If you need to re-wrap, try waxed paper taped tightly closed. As a last resort, plastic wrap is fine, but don’t forget about your cheese, or it will get sweaty and suffocate. Soft cheeses like Brie are best consumed within a week to ten days. Harder cheeses like Gruyere or Parmigiano-Reggiano can be kept three to four weeks.
