Introduction

After training at culinary schools on both sides of the Pacific, and refining her craft for over a decade at iconic restaurants in New York (Bouley, the Russian Tea Room and Le Bernadin), Tomoko Kato launched her own café and pastry shop in Brooklyn in 2013. At Patisserie Tomoko she uses her classic French pastry-making talent and passion for Japanese culture to create inspired treats like her heralded mochi. These melt-in-your-mouth treats in green tea, Earl Grey chocolate and black sesame are uniquely delicious, and her classic French macarons and Asian-inspired cookies are equally sublime. If you happen to be in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood anytime soon, stop in, grab a seat at the dessert bar and she’ll pair a perfect wine or sake with one of her inspired desserts.

About The Food

Patisserie Tomoko brings you a delightful fusion of Japanese and European delights. It’s your favorite deserts with an Asian twist: cookies and macarons in Japanese flavors, their famous mochi—round Japanese pastries featuring a soft, sweet rice flour outside—with fillings like black sesame, green tea, and Earl Grey chocolate whose fudgey chocolate center is made with chocolate ganache and infused with Earl Grey tea. They’re light, rich, dense and floral all at once. Make sure to try their square-shaped cookies (in flavors like Green Tea and Caramel Nut) and their ethereal "Crunch"–hybrid cookie-brownie bites that come in flavors like Green Tea, Black Sesame and Dark Chocolate.

Meet The Owner

Tomoko Kato trained at culinary schools both in the U.S. and in Japan, particularly specializing in traditional French pastries and desserts. Later, she worked and trained at top-rated New York restaurant meccas Bouley, Le Bernadin and the Russian Tea Room. She was responsible for setting up Cha An, a Japanese tea house and sweets shop in 2003, and was the executive chef throughout her tenure. In 2012 she embarked on a new and different adventure—setting up her own café and pastry shop in Brooklyn. Her dream was to create her own style of desserts and breads that combine the best of the cultures of her two favorite countries, Japan and America, in unique and original ways. In 2013, she opened Patisserie Tomoko to rave reviews, and to the delight of regulars and tourists who come from near and far to experience her wondrous treats.
