Introduction

Creating a standout Christmas bread is no easy feat. But Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey has taken bread making very seriously since learning to bake in Italy and returning to open his Manhattan shop in 1994. (His second location, in Chelsea, debuted in 2012.) It’s here, at the shop of the first ever recipient of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker, that everyone from Vogue, the New York Times, and Bon Appetit editors to Martha Stewart and the Today show point as the source for breads so exemplary of perfection, that they inspired Lahey to launch The University of Bread, his school dedicated to sharing the traditions and practices of outstanding baking. Like many of his other specialties, his traditional panettone, or Italian Christmas bread, sets the standard with spectacular flavor and stylish gift-box packaging, which makes it the perfect holiday gift for the host or food-lover.

About The Bread

Sullivan Street Bakery already had a loyal following when New York Times food writer Mark Bittman wrote about their revolutionary no-work, no-knead baking method. But the notoriety made Sullivan Street’s practices, which Bittman promises, “will blow your mind,” downright famous. The secret? A wet dough and slow fermentation and baking in a heated covered pot, which creates essentially an oven within an oven to trap steam as the bread bakes. Add to that a strong dedication to sustainable, seasonal living and food craft and relationships with local New York farmers and food producers and you’ve got exceptional, seasonal baked goods that showcase baking skill, tradition, and flavor at its very best. We’re proud to introduce Sullivan Street with their panettone, just in time for Christmas. But we’ll be shipping more of their legendary breads nationwide in early 2016.

Meet the Baker

Jim Lahey studied sculpture before learning the art of bread baking in Italy. When he returned to New York City in 1994, he opened Sullivan St Bakery in Soho with little more than the wild yeast he hand-cultivated in Italy and a desire to bring the craft of small-batch bread baking to America. In October 2000, Lahey built the Sullivan St Bakery headquarters in Hell’s Kitchen, where he has become renowned not just for his bread, but for his Roman-style pizza, rustic Italian pastries, cookies and panettone.

Lahey teamed with Jean-Georges Vongerichten and restaurateur Phil Suarez to open Co. in 2009, sparking a city-wide boom of wood-fired pizza restaurants sporting slow-fermented doughs dressed with market-driven ingredients.

In May 2015, Lahey was honored as the inaugural winner of Outstanding Baker award by the James Beard Foundation in an event held in Chicago.
